April 11, 2023 – Newport News, VA – Brad Waters, Instructional Designer at Spectrum Comm Inc. receives a check of $1,000 on behalf of the organization VFW-Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2894. This is the second year Spectrum has donated to the annual Bataan Death March Commemorative Walk which took place on April 8th at the Great Dismal Swamp, Chesapeake, VA.

Every spring, this event remembers the veterans who gave their lives in the 66-mile Bataan Death March which took place during WWII. The march began on April 9, 1942 and lasted approximately 5 days. The Japanese army marched approximately 66,000 Filipino, and 10,000 American prisoners of war from the southern Bataan Peninsula to Camp O’Donnell, approximately 66 miles. It isn’t known for sure how many prisoners died on the route, or at the camp, but it is in the tens of thousands between the Filipinos and Americans.

“The donation helps us (the VFW 2894) raise money,” Brad Waters shares, “This is our largest fundraiser of the year. This money goes right back into helping local veterans and their families…of any era. We build ramps, enlarge bathrooms/doorways, repair/replace roofs, do yardwork, etc.”

Spectrum CEO Jeff Wassmer states, “Giving back to our community, especially to our military veterans, is important to us as individuals and as a company. We hope to continue to provide annual support to events like the Bataan Death March Memorial walk.”

On January 1, 2009 Spectrum implemented the “Spectrum Foundation.” This Foundation serves as the governing body for all of Spectrum’s charitable giving. The Spectrum Foundation is a donor advised fund managed by the Peninsula Community Foundation of Virginia. To learn more visit https://www.sptrm.com/who-we-are/#foundation
